Our motto "Gunmakers for Responsible Citizens®" reflects our commitment to these principles as we work hard to deliver the highest quality and newest firearms. In this edition of TFB Wheelgun Wednesday, we take a look at my classic everyday piece, the Ruger SP101. The .357 Magnum SP101 was introduced a few years after the release of its big brother, the Ruger GP100 in the late 1980s, and has since been chambered in .22LR, .327 Federal Magnum, .38 Special and 9mm. The prefix "SP" on the Ruger SP101 revolver is often referred to as "Special Purpose" as opposed to "General Purpose" on the GP100, but it does not appear in any current literature on the Ruger website or in advertisements. The Ruger SP101 revolver was also used by the French police. Let's take a look at this controversial concealed carry pistol, the Ruger SP101.

The Ruger SP101 is a wheeled pistol that stands out, mainly due to its heavy construction with a capacity of only five rounds (in .357, .38 and 9mm). When I bought the SP101 in about 2003 or 2004, it was more affordable than any Smith & Wesson I was interested in, and that was a big factor for me in my tight budget and willingness to step up to the 27 oz. firing 125 grain .357 Magnum rockets into any chassis that threatened me and mine. That was already my favorite cartridge and grain weight, which was good since the first ads from Ruger said the SP101 was "built exclusively for them".

At the time, the Ruger SP101 was offered in 2.25 and 3-inch barrel lengths, but has since been offered in a 4.2-inch configuration. Although I was more interested in the 2.25” barrel, I chose the 3” version to get more velocity in the .357 Magnum.

The Ruger SP101 has a crane lock on the front of the barrel that locks into the frame, adding to the durability of its construction.

I found that when paired with the Active Pro Gear Tuckable whiteboard holster, my Ruger SP101 holstered nicely at the 4 o'clock position. Granted, I didn't spend enough time and money figuring out how to carry and conceal my Glock 26, which I replaced with an SP101, but I found what worked for the SP and did it that way for the next 11 years. Sometime during those 11 years, the clip on my Active Pro Gear holster broke when I adjusted it with too much pressure, so I made my own Kydex holster in the same photo as before. A few years later, I injured my right wrist, so I easily made a bag that I would wear on my left side until I recovered.

My DIY Kydex holster may not look the best, but it is very effective at concealing the SP101 and is retractable.

The Ruger SP101 can be customized in a few different ways, one of which is that the front sight can be changed by removing the pin. I ordered a night sight to replace the black factory raid sight and it is still bright and easy to use with the milled rear chute.

Another way to customize the Ruger SP101 is the grip. I've always liked the square rubber grips on the GP100 and SP101, but the SP came standard with plastic grip inserts that didn't look good compared to the GP's wooden inserts. The downside to the SP101 is that the rubber handle would catch my shirt when I removed it, and I often had to pull on that side of my shirt after bending over.

After years of shooting, carrying and stripping my SP101 one of the mounts failed and I replaced the plastic insert with a set of unfinished wood ones I found on eBay. I only had to apply a few coats. VZ Grips, Hogue, and Pachmayr carry the Ruger SP101, while various small retailers and hobbyists make dozens of grips for all sorts of things and tastes.

Both my Ruger GP100 and SP101 have surprised me with very smooth triggers. At the time I bought them, and even today, the internet forums are full of how the Ruger competitors don't compare to the S&W, and while they are different, the competitors in my Rugers are smooth and clean. However, adding my night vision added some height compared to the previous factory ramp, so my shots tend to be on the low side.

In general, the weight of the Ruger SP101 is good for holding recoil, while the large molded rubber grip does the rest. But if you want to load hot, heavy loads like 158-grain bullets into it, make sure you hold it tight. When I put on my SP101,
