The device fits on the back of the Glock and allows the user to switch between semi-auto and full-auto. When engaged, the switch overrides the trigger mechanism to act as a machine gun.
"For every pull of the trigger, it fires several rounds," added Ashley Leitner, an ATF special agent who oversees the agency's cases in Alabama. "It can fire at a rate of eleven to twelve hundred rounds per minute." It is very dangerous for innocent bystanders. It's not a perfect weapon."

BPD started looking at Glock switches in Birmingham about a year ago. The ATF confirms that incidents in the Southeast have increased over the past three months.

"We hear him regularly on ShotSpotter, so we know he's in our city," Thurmond added.
ShotSpotter is a police tool that maps shootings across the city. BPD released a recent video of a ShotSpotter report where they believe a Glock switch was used. We clearly heard 26 rounds per second being fired.
Earlier this year, BPD recovered a Glock switch pistol in an officer-involved shooting. Although they are not directly dealing with this fire, it is changing the way police officers work.
"It's disconcerting to see something concealed in a handgun, in one's pocket, belt or anywhere else with the ability to fire rounds very quickly," Thurmond said.

According to the ATF, most of the equipment comes from out of country or is home-made, making it easy to find.
"It's simple," Leitner admits. "You can get them on the street." We've seen prices online anywhere from $15 to $30 over the last few years, we've seen them rise to $150 in popularity here recently. You can get them on the high street for over $1,000.
"There is no state law banning glock switches or machine guns, although they exist in other states," said the U.S. District Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. Attorney Prim Escalona said. "Alabama doesn't have that."
