Taurus, a Brazilian gun manufacturer, released the pistol in the mid-2000s and marketed the Judge as a personal defense weapon. At the time, the Judge was known simply by its model number, 4410, a designation that was certainly not eye-catching.

According to reports, Vice President Bull has heard that local judges in some Miami counties have taken the gun to court in a case that could spiral out of control. To better reflect the pistol's dual .45 Colt/.410 chambering, Taurus redesigned the pistol with the model number 4510 and named it the Judge.

Because of the money in the Judge's rifle, the gun could theoretically spray its .410 cartridges in much wider shots than a bolt-action shotgun. While a smoothbore shot simply moves forward through the barrel, the referee's rifle must fire. 45 Colt revolver cartridges can be fired with a spin that provides a much wider spread at shorter distances than would be possible with an equivalent flathead. . However, the Judge's rifle is presumably shallower than an equivalent pistol or revolver, so there is a trade-off between single-shot accuracy and the spread of .410 rounds.
The base cartridge for The Judge's pistol is the .45 Colt, a cartridge that has grown in popularity since its introduction in the early 1870s. The cartridge served as the standard US military pistol cartridge for about 15 years and was originally a black propellant cartridge, although modern loads use a smokeless powder propellant.
Similarly, the .410 cartridge came to life in the 1870s and, despite its age, is still considered a lighter, more manageable round, especially for new or younger shooters. The relatively small diameter of the cartridge lends itself to rifles designed for pest control or as military survival rifles or, according to Bull, for personal defense.
Today, the Taurus Judge line is available in a variety of frame materials, barrel lengths and chamberings, and newer models can also chamber the massive .454 Casull cartridge as well as the smaller .45 Colt and .410 shot cartridges.

Some reviews of the Bull Judge comment on the pistol's poor accuracy, a factor that might not be too much of a problem for a shotgun. Accuracy aside, the Judge is certainly a powerful handgun that may make some feel a little more confident as a self-defense weapon.

A shotgun loaded with shot is suitable for small game and pest control. The .410 was launched in the United Kingdom as a sidearm alongside the .360 and No. 3 bore (9mm), #2 bore (7mm) and #1 bore (6mm) edge slide lines. .410 cartridges have base dimensions similar to the .45 Colt cartridge, allowing many single-shot firearms, as well as some chambered in that caliber, to fire .410 cartridges without modification.

Full length brass cases are available and reloadable. Brass cartridges can be made from .444 Marlin rifle cartridges and can be reloaded.

The Savage Model 24 is an American made over the counter pistol manufactured by Savage Arms. The basic .22LR over caliber .410 model weighs 7 pounds (3.2 kg), has 24-inch (610 mm) barrels, and is 41 inches (1,000 mm) long overall. It can also be taken apart for easy storage. Its predecessor was made by Staves and carried a titi coat and forearm. In World War II, 15,000 Aircrew Survival Kits were ordered and issued to Army Air Force bomber crews for use as survival weapons when shot down.
The M6 aircrew survival weapon was produced for the US Air Force with a .22 Hornet rifle barrel mounted on a .410 bore shotgun barrel and was first issued in the Korean War. The military also specifies an aluminum .410 3-inch (76 mm) cartridge with a rifled primer as standard issue under the ammunition designation M-35. The civilian version of the Springfield Armory M6 Scout has a .22 stud or .22 Hornet .410 bore on a shotgun barrel. The original M6 has a 14-inch (360 mm) barrel, the same length as the stock, and folds in half for storage to form a compact package. In short, this is legally classified as any other weapon in the United States, so the M6 Scout is made with an 18.5-inch (470 mm) barrel for civilian sale.

The fact that the .410 bore is chambered in .45 Colt has led to some unusual uses. While shotguns are often limited to a minimum length, a firearm chambered in .45 Colt, such as the Contder pistol, is not defined as a shotgun even though it may chamber shotgun shells. In Britain, .410 shotguns are used to kill rats where a full-fledged shotgun is not appropriate.
Thompson Cter Arms Contder pistols are usually countered with a custom .45 Colt/.410 barrel. The line is rifled for .45 Colt but has a custom choke and vt rib to make it work like a shotgun. Firearms assembled because of a rifle are considered either rifles or pistols (depending on barrel length) and are therefore not subject to the National Firearms Act minimum barrel length of 18 inches (460 mm).
However, possession of a Thompson Cter Arms .45/.410 revolver barrel is illegal in California for both dealers and individuals, and such a barrel cannot be legally shipped into the state or transported into California for hunting. This is because it is classified as a short barrel shotgun (SBSG) used with a Contder receiver.
Taurus, Magnum Research and Smith & Wesson also offer extended barrel revolvers that can also hold the .410 cartridge. Magnum Research offers a single-action pistol in their BFR (large frame revolver) line, while the Taurus Judge is priced similarly to their other double-action pistols, and the Raging Judge model can chamber and fire the .454 Casull cartridge.
