There is a problem, the Bangladesh Air Force cannot absorb more than one fighter squadron at the same time. The Swedes asked the Bangladesh Air Force to purchase at least 32 fighter jets in the initial contract. This is completely unsustainable, as Bangladesh's resources do not allow the purchase of more than one fleet of such expensive warplanes. This option was abandoned. When Bangladesh Air Force Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat visited Sweden last year to attend the International Society for Military Simulation, Education and Training (ITEC) 2019 in Stockholm, he discussed the possibility of purchasing an AEW&CS aircraft from Saab. The Bangladesh Air Force instead seeks to operate around a dozen fighter squadrons, which include a mix of heavy twin-engine multi-role fighters, a squadron of naval fighter jets, ground attack aircraft and single-engine light fighters.

Due to recent advances in domestic engine technology, China has indicated that it is finally ready to export the J-10C to the Bangladesh Air Force. Several Chinese delegations have visited Dhaka over the past few years to offer cooperation in aerospace trade and technology transfer. Bangladesh Air Force has signed a contract with a Chinese firm to establish an MRO and production facility for the production of aviation munitions for the first time in the country. This would allow the Air Force to keep large quantities of Chinese ammunition in its wartime inventory.

With China's anti-aircraft munitions factory on the way, there is little room for others to seize the opportunity. In addition, Bangladesh has canceled Beijing's bid to build a strategic deep-sea port in the Bay of Bengal. This has angered China's government of Bangladesh, and the purchase of the J-10C will serve to reassure Beijing that it will have a long-term security commitment in Dhaka, at least for the duration of such major weapons programs.

Geopolitics aside, I can tell you the J-10C is a competent fighter. It may be a little small compared to the Rafale, but it makes up for it by performing strongly in the sensor and weapons department. Equipped with an AESA fire control radar, electronic warfare suites and targeting modules, the J-10C is also capable of carrying over 7,000 kg of external storage, including fuel and ammunition. J-10 fighters can carry the latest Chinese air-to-air munitions such as the PL-12 and PL-15. This will surely instill fear of God in the enemies of Bangladesh Air Force! The ability to deploy all of China's next-generation precision-guided munitions and secondary naval attack capability make the J-10C the most attractive option for the Bangladesh Air Force.

The team expects the Air Force to eventually purchase three to four squadrons of J-10s over a 15-20 year period. The warplanes will help transform the Bangladesh Air Force into one of the most equipped air forces in Asia.
