163 Area Code Usa - Area codes 631 and 934 are the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) telephone area codes for Suffolk County, New York on Long Island. Area code 631 was created in 1999 as separate from 516; and 934 were added as overlays in 2016. Communities within the area include Babylon, Huntington, Islip, Smithtown, Brookhav, Riverhead, Southampton, Southold, Shelter Island and East Hampton.
With the announcement of a new national telephone numbering plan by the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in October 1947, the 914 area code was assigned to Suffolk County, Nassau County, the Lower Hudson Valley, and some of the surrounding areas.

On November 1, 1999, the 631 area code was created exclusively for Suffolk County to meet the increased need for telephone numbers primarily due to cellular service, while Nassau County retained the 516 area code. Legal dialing of 516 on Long Island continued into the spring of 2000.
On July 16, 2016, the 934 area code was created to coat 631, which is almost sold out. This is the first overlay area code for New York State areas outside of New York City and, as of June 18, 2016, requires a 10-digit dialing for both area codes.
