The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (abbreviated as 3rd MAW) is the West Coast aviation unit of the United States Marine Corps. Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, San Diego, California is headquartered and provides the combat aviation element of the I Marine Expeditionary Force. The wing consists of a headquarters group, four flying groups, an aviation group and a control group and an aircraft production group.

The 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing was activated on 10 November 1942 at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina with a crew of 13 officers, 25 enlisted M's and one aircraft, one instructor.
The combat history of this unit began on December 3, 1943 with the deployment of a bomber group in World War II. A little more than a year later, the division sent a night squadron to support the war effort.
In early April 1944, the wing changed its training responsibilities and assigned units to the 9th Marine Aircraft Wing, and on 21 April 1944 the three ships USS Gambier Bay CVE-73, USS Hoggat Bay CVE-75, and USS Kitkun Bay boarded the CVE. -71 on a trip to Hawaii and arrived on 8 May, where he assumed duties as Marine Air, Hawaii Area (MAHA).
When the Japanese surrendered, the 3rd MAW was disbanded at Marine Corps Air Station Ewa on 31 December 1945 and its personnel were assigned to other units.

The unit played an important, but behind-the-scenes role during the war by training Marine pilots and support personnel for overseas combat operations.
In 1952, as the Marine Corps returned to combat in the Far East, the unit again served at MCAS Cherry Point for the Korean War. The main body of the wing began moving to the new Marine Corps Air Station in Miami, the first Marine Corps "flying field."
In September 1955, the wing moved from MCAS Miami to Marine Corps Air Station El Toro, California. The 3rd MAW was reconstituted on 5 September 1955 with the addition of Marine Aircraft Group 15, followed by Marine Aircraft Group 36,
The wing was blocked and sent to Vietnam as the war began in Southeast Asia. Several units were returned to the United States during the Vietnam War and were either inactivated or reactivated, forming the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing as it is formed today.

The unit also saw action as part of the I Marine Expeditionary Force (I MEF), which operated in Iraq and Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm. A squadron of more than 40 aircraft were deployed, flying more than 18,000 while operating from 6 airfields in all theaters.
After the end of hostilities, the 3rd MAW aircraft supported Operation Provide Comfort and Operation Southern Watch over Iraq. The unit was also called to Somalia for Operation Restore Hope. In 1999, the 3rd MAW moved to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, California.
The War on Terror began in the fall of 2001, and the 3rd MAW deployed several troops to support the ongoing Operation Liberation in Afghanistan.
In the fall of 2002, the unit began deployment to Kuwait in preparation for combat in Iraq. The division eventually moved 435 aircraft and 15,451 personnel to Southwest Asia before the invasion, the division's first deployment since the Gulf War and the largest since the Vietnam War.

Their two main bases in Kuwait were Ali Al-Sallam Air Base and Ahmad Al-Jaber Air Base, while units under the wing also established 15 Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) or Forward Arming and Refueling Points ( -FARP) during the march north.
During the attack, the 3rd MAW dropped more than 6 million pounds, including more than 2,300 rocket-propelled grenades and 2,200 precision-guided munitions.
